Post with 1 note
Just the other day I was finally gonna go to sleep at about 1:00AM, but a friend posted a link to a video and I decided to watch it. Before clicking play I checked the video length and saw that it ran for 30 minutes, I asked myself if the video was going to be worth staying up another half hour to watch; I did anyway. At the end I felt that it was worth the 30 minutes. I will admit, that soon after I was swept in the craze and threw myself on the bandwagon to support the KONY 2012 campaign without any further research. I was wrong. In hindsight, I was probably more impressed with the quality of the video than anything else. In the far back of my mind, the information was very one-sided.
A friend posted a Facebook note and tagged multiple people who had reposted the video and made very valid points, though I felt a little attacked when he tagged me. The day after I had reposted (now deleted) the 30-minute documentary of the KONY 2012 campaign by Invisible Children (IC), multiple posts going against the campaign surfaced. After reading them I realized something that I should’ve thought about in the first place: the world is not as black and white as we think it is, there are so many grey areas in between that have to be taken into consideration.
Another friend brought up a valid point as well, unfortunately you can’t take too much at face-value these days. IC had good intentions, but after some research, I don’t think they were lying but they weren’t telling the whole truth either. “…if people hadn’t decided that deceiving others was the best way to go about things…”
The cause is great, and to be aware of the cause is even better. There’s no doubt that Kony should be stopped, but there are other things to consider as well. Again I say, not everything is black and white; take all perspectives and aspects into consideration. I know I will.
